Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults.

The unit applies to educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

Entry Requirements

There are no academic requirements for this qualification, however, East West Training requires that all students:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor
  • It is recommended that participants have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework level 2.

Course Outcome

Students who satisfactorily complete the course will be issued a Statement of Attainment for HLTAID012 Provide first aid response in an education and care setting.

Course Structure (First Time Learner and Refresher Course)

This course is structured to ensure that students receive adequate training in HLTAID012 Provide first aid in an education and care setting.

OPTION 1 & 2: Blended Learning: Home Learning (Theory/knowledge Pre-learning) & Classroom Training (Face to Face – Practical)

Pre-learning will be undertaken by:

  1. Using the East West Training’s student workbook which is sent to them upon enrolment. The learner is required to read the book to help gain an understanding of the subject matter. Then they are required to complete the 166 assessment questions. The workbook and the completed assessments are brought to the classroom when attending the session for a one day of practical work. Materials are reviewed and checked by the assessor / trainer.
  2. Estimated time to complete the pre-learning: 4 to 8 hours depending on student skill level, e.g. refresher course, first time learner, etc.

Classroom training and assessment will be undertaken by:

  1. The nine (9) hours in one full day version (suited to learners doing the prescribed course as a refresher course)
    1. Is only available to learners who have completed all the pre-learning materials before attending the One (1) day session. The One (1) day session focuses on the practical aspects of the subject matter plus some theory aspects.
    2. Standard course time: One (1) full day (9 hours) including meal breaks

OPTION 3: Classroom Training (Face to Face – Practical and Theory/knowledge)

Two (2) full day version (suited to learners doing the prescribed course for the first time or recommended for learners with learning difficulties, LLN requirements)

  1. No pre-learning is required to be undertaken prior. Using East West Training student workbook. Knowledge/theory and practical aspects are interwoven over the two (2) day period.

Standard course time: two (2) full days (16 hours) including meal breaks

  • Access to resources including course handouts, first aid equipment and ARC approved mannequins. (Students will need to bring a notebook and pen to the session)

Campus Details and Facilities

East West Training is located at 67 Sydney Road, Coburg VIC. This is where all face-to-face training will be delivered.

The campus at Coburg provides quality teaching and learning facilities for students. The training facilities have been set up to run classroom-based training sessions, to support the learning and assessment programs we offer.

The campus includes well-appointed facilities that offer a comfortable learning environment.

Identification of Student Needs and Student Support

Student needs are declared by the applicant at the time of enrolment: the application form allows the applicant to self declare where they have learning disabilities.

Reasonable adjustments to training and assessment will be made and additional support (e.g. LLN, additional training, alternative delivery and assessment modes and methods) provided where students with physical attributes or specific learning needs are identified as requiring these changes to complete their training and assessment.
